Learning to Ride
Horne Pond - Limington, ME - USA
This is the exact moment that my little brother Alias learned how to ride his bike. Dad is standing next to him pooped out from running behind him and holding the seat until Alias got the hang of balancing. I have some of my earliest memories of doing this same thing with my dad when I was 3 years old, and it was cool and weird at the same time to watch it happen from the 3rd person!
With that there are several lessons for me in this photo. For one, this photo is far from technically perfect, it has blown out highlights, and is ultimately a bit soft due to a rookie mistake at the time of leaving my ISO set much higher than it needed to be etc... but at the end of the day, it is one of my favorite photos I have ever taken, and possibly one of the most powerful. To caputre a moment like this - to preserve it - to share it, for me that is what this photography thing is all about. And though it isn't perfect, I have come to realize that the best photos rarely are.
And yes, definitely, I admit that I am a little biased, since I lived this moment myself as a young boy, but in the end I think it holds something special, and I am just glad I was there to capture it, and I hope you feel some of the magic of this moment when you see it too!
