Taughannock Falls State Park, Ulysses, NY - USA
Taughannock Falls, pronounced "tuh-GAN-uck," (according to the locals I asked) is a very picturesque waterfall in the finger lakes region of New York. The somewhat legendary falls are 33 feet taller than Niagara making it the highest single drop waterfall in the northeastern United States. There are a few theories about how it got its name and what it means, but the most common idea is that it was named after the chief of a Delaware tribe that attacked and was killed by the local Cayuga Indians. After his death the Cayuga tossed his body over the falls. Anyway this is the stunning heart shaped view of the falls from the top, but the views from the bottom and the gorge trail are equally gorgeous. If you are in the area and are looking for something to do to walk off some of that cheese and wine, budget a half day and take your time on this incredibly scenic hike.
